The crowd is pumped and pouring the love toward the stage and the band is feeling it and throwing it right back. Then, it’s very common for the artists to bring the raw recorded tracks into the studio and “sweeten” them correcting mistakes, rerecording some things, etc… Not cool, but it’s done routinely and pretty much accepted.īut every now and then, they catch lightning in a bottle. What’s the point of that? Thank you Don Henley, but we’ll stick with the studio records we already own. The Eagles go in the complete opposite direction their live hits are virtually identical to the studio versions. Look, I can appreciate the artist reinterpreting their own material from a different angle, and I can appreciate that they’ve played these songs a zillion times. The artist may not have included your favorite tunes, or if those hits were included, they are now so rearranged that they’ve been rendered almost unrecognizable (Bob Dylan is especially bad about that). The tempos may be way off (some bands rev up the tempo so high that dancing is all but impossible). On live albums, you may sometimes find the sound quality isn’t all that great. The only other project that gives the artists as much bang for their buck is a Christmas album it doesn’t cost a ton of money and keeps the cash register ringing year after year. Why do the artists record them? Consider this: live albums are cheap to produce and are a good way to keep the artists’ name in lights until the next record. After all, there’s at least an 80% chance that you’re gonna be disappointed…and pissed off that you wasted your valuable coin.Įven though I’m a fan of live records, I’ll admit that you’re probably right. In general, live albums are thought of as inferior.
